22 Jump Street

 

Hello my field daisies!

22 Jump Street is exactly the same as 21 Jump Street, except instead of high school, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are going undercover and searching for drugs as college students. Despite there being little variety, I throughly enjoyed it and laughed hysterically, mostly because 22 Jump Street was bigger and badder. The characters also seemed very aware that they were doing exactly the same thing, creating a satire on sequel films. In the movie, they  repeatedly mention they are doing the same thing, such as Captain Dickson (Ice Cube) telling Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko ( Channing Tatum), “It’s the same case! Do the same thing!”

 

If you enjoyed 21 Jump Street and want to relive its glory, I recommend seeing 22 Jump Street. But be warned it is eerily similar to the first one. Here are some of my favorite moments, characters, jokes, etc.

SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT!

The movie starts off very  fast paced, with TURN DOWN FOR WHAT?! playing in the background. Schmidt and Jenko try to do something different, going after Ghost, the biggest trafficker of illegal goods in Mexico City. They have to go undercover as Mexican thugs, and Schmidt does a perfect impression of a gangster. But Jenko has trouble improvising and thinking on his feet, resulting in him stuttering and listing off characters from Dora the Explorer. The juxtaposition of these two is hilarious. Of course we all know Channing Tatum is great at improv, as we can see in the end of the movie, when Jenko and Schmidt must stall by faking an argument.

Speaking of Channing Tatum’s skills, he is literally Spiderman in this movie, doing parkour, scaling up buildings and kicking ass.

 

In contrast, Schmidt is the clumsiest guy ever, having to take the stairs as Jenko scales walls.

This is him during a fraternity’s initiation, attempting to pole vault across a high wall of beer cans and boxes.

Jenko fits into the fraternity perfectly, buddying with drug supplier and frat brother, Zook, Wyatt Russell. Their chemistry is so strong, making Schmidt super jealous.

In a hilarious counselor session, the therapist makes Schmidt and Jenko hold hands. Jenko doesn’t want to, but Schmidt does, badly. Here’s how you hold hands with your bae:

 

The drug this time is called WhyPhy (pronounced like WiFi). It’s such a cool play on words, with the W.H.P.H standing for

The drug is supposedly a mix between adderall and ecstasy, allowing you to cram for your exams and then party after.

 

The Lucas brothers play college students that live in the same dorm as Jenko and Schmidt. Their movements are mannerisms are so in sync I literally thought it was just one actor with cloning editing magic. Cloning yourself is actually pretty easy to do. YouTuber Wheezy Waiter does an excellent job of cloning.

There is also excellent use of split screen, showing Jenko and Schmidt at different places doing different things. It’s cool when their split screens match up and they are at the same place at the same time. I couldn’t find any good pictures demonstrating this, so you’ll just have to see for yourself. This is Schmidt doing the walk of shame after spending the night at Maya’s house. Maya is played by Amber Stevens.

 

A hilarious plot twist is that Maya happens to be Captain Dickson’s daughter.

When Jenko finds out, he laughs extensively, running around the office while the Captain mean mugs Schmidt.

 

Speaking of the office, look at how bad ass it is now.

Haha get it? Because Dickson is played by Ice Cube? (cry laugh emjoi)

The funny part about this office is that it is right across from the 21 Jump  Street headquarters, which was a disheveled Korean church. And right next to the Korean church is a construction site for a condo place called 23 Jump Street. If they do decide to do a sophomore film, I really hope they change it up a bit.

 

Ugh I wish Eric Molsen (Dave Franco) was in this movie more! He only had a few lines, which is just devastating. If only they could have made him and Mr. Walters (Rob Riggle) go undercover too, and in exchange for their help maybe lighten their sentence.

My favorite line in the movie is when Eric says, “I was supposed to go to Berkeley.”

But that might be bias opinion because I currently go to Berkeley… Go bears! 🙂

Actually my favorite line in the movie is toward the end when Jenko throws the grenade at the bad guy’s helicopter.

Before he throws it, Schmidt tells Jenko to say something cool when he does. So that’s what he says, “Something cool!” When they are on shore, Schmidt asks what Jenko said, and the following conversation takes place:

Schmidt: Hey what’d you say when you threw that grenade up there?

Jenko: I said something cool.

Schmidt: No but what did you say?

Jenko: It was something cool.

Schmidt: No but what did you say?

Jenko: I said SOMETHING COOL.
