The Streets of New York

The Streets of New York
By Daisy Dai

Sometimes I fantasize
about running into you on
the streets of New York.

I imagine bursting into
tears at the mere sight
of you, and

I imagine you sobbing
with me, holding me
in your warm arms
as our bodies
shake.

The last moment we had
the weight, the stone
in our bellies that
has finally
floated
up.

In reality, you will probably
see me and keep walking.

My face might get red and hot, but
tears will not fall, and I will continue.

Even if we did stop
to say anything,
most likely it
wouldn’t be
anything
nice.

Our breakup was not the smoothest.

But I cannot help but dream
about us crying together
on the streets of
New York.

Two ex-lovers,
fully forced,
to stop and
forgive
the past.
