Style Alert: Orange is the New Black

 

Hello my field daisies!

I’ve just discovered Orange is the New Black. Yes I know I am a year late, but nevertheless this show is still relevant and awesome. The second season is due to come out June  6, 2014, which leaves me plenty of time to binge watch the first season. It’s a Netflix original, which means no commercials and instant streaming thank goodness! The show is about a girl named Piper Chapman who has to go to prison for 15 months for smuggling drug money. This series is based off of a real story and a real girl named Piper Karem.

I’ve only watched up to the third episode, and I am already attached to all the characters. Let me give you a little breakdown episode 3, which eludes to the show’s style as a whole. The show is all about interconnectivity, seamlessly connecting plotlines with closeups and object placement. A towel from Piper’s fianese, Larry, could become Piper’s towel as she is drying off her hair in the community shower. The plot is also not linear, and can travel through time with rapid flashbacks and scene changes.

Episode 3 starts off with Sophia, who is a transgender woman. In a way, this episode is about her life, how she got to jail and the struggle for her to get the estrogen medication she needs.

 

 

 

 

There are also themes of unrequited and requited love.

 

 

 

And just a side note: the cookies that Larry mentions, Uncle Eddie’s Vegan Cookies, are so magically delicious and should be considered a love affair.

And let’s not forget the love affair between Piper and Alex. Alex is the ex-girlfriend of Piper, the drug smuggler who got her put in jail in the first place.

There are plenty of plotline that I didn’t hit, but hopefully these are enough to convince you to start watching Orange is the New Black. If not here are a few more random stills.

Sigh… I would discover this great show a week before my finals… But I’ll manage…
